What foods are high in CoQ10 and urolithin A?
CoQ10 is found most notably in fatty fish like mackerel and sardines or in meats like beef, pork, and chicken (particularly organ meats). However, diet alone won't realistically provide clinical servings of CoQ10; you'd have to eat nearly four pounds of chicken liver or over six pounds of mackerel per day to consume CoQ10 in quantities like ours that have been shown to deliver benefits in clinical research.
Meanwhile, urolithin A is technically not something we consume in foods but is instead a postbiotic metabolite created in the gut after we eat certain polyphenol-rich foods like pomegranates and berries. The problem is that even if all Americans were to incorporate pomegranate and berries into their diet, scientific research shows that only a small portion of people are actually able to produce urolithin A from dietary sources.
What's the difference between CoQ10, ubiquinone, and ubiquinol?
Ubiquinone and ubiquinol are both forms of CoQ10; ubiquinol is the reduced form, while ubiquinone is the oxidized form. Ubiquinone has a much larger body of research to date, but ubiquinol may be more bioavailable (yielding a greater increase in serum CoQ10). Based on our analysis of scientific research, there isn't an overwhelmingly compelling rationale for choosing one over the other; in the body, CoQ10 converts back and forth between ubiquinol and ubiquinone rapidly. A single CoQ10 molecule will switch about 5,000 times every hour, or more than once per second. In this supplement, we opt for the form of CoQ10 that has been studied the most in humans.
Is CoQ10 a vitamin?
CoQ10 is considered "vitamin-like" thanks to its antioxidant activity and its vital role in cellular health, yet it is not considered a vitamin. Vitamins are generally regarded as nutrients that your body can't produce in adequate amounts and must be obtained through diet. While there are dietary sources of CoQ10, it's a substance your body's cells synthesize. Clinical evidence shows that CoQ10 synthesis declines as we age, with peak natural concentrations occurring around age 25.
Does time of day matter for taking this supplement?
It may matter, and we recommend taking CoQ10 Advanced in the morning; some people experience an increase in energy after taking CoQ10, which can disrupt sleep if you take it at night.
How long until I notice results?
Clinical research (linked above) shows that positive effects of CoQ10 or urolithin A do not occur overnight but require weeks or months or consistent daily use. Aerobic benefits and improved muscular strength, endurance, and recovery are seen in studies after 1.5–2 months of daily use, and the clinical research shows those benefits continuing to build over the course of four months. Research into energy/stamina and parameters associated with heart health support indicate that effects may require 1-3 months of daily use.
Is urolithin A hard on the liver?
There is no scientific evidence of this, and to the contrary, there is evidence suggesting the opposite. Human studies of urolithin A show no liver toxicity, while preclinical studies indicate that urolithin A may prevent oxidative stress and offer protective benefits for the liver.
Will CoQ10 or urolithin A make me gain fat?
No — in fact, if anything, research indicates that the opposite may be true. Human studies thus far show that urolithin A can improve muscular and mitochondrial health without significantly changing body weight or fat mass. Preclinical studies suggest urolithin A may reduce fat accumulation. Some evidence suggests that CoQ10 supplementation can reduce visceral fat, though meta-analyses currently conclude that weight loss from CoQ10 is insignificant.
Can I take this supplement with other supplements or medications?
We formulated CoQ10 Advanced to be effective and safe for healthy adults, based on human research. Many Americans include CoQ10 and urolithin A in their regimen alongside other dietary supplements. But as with any supplement, you should speak to your doctor before adding this to your routine. Only through discussion with your healthcare practitioner can you arrive properly at a conclusion that the supplement is safe and recommendable for you, based on your underlying health and any medications or supplements you are already taking.
